Remember a week ago I posted a story about the Borderlands movie coming to streaming at the end of this month? Well, my fellow Vault Hunters, it’s true: the Borderlands movie will officially be available to rent on the likes of Amazon prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play and more on August 30th.
That’s an incredibly fast turnaround for the movie, as it debuted in cinemas just three weeks ago where it crashed and burned harder than even Concord is currently managing. Ok, that was a slightly mean joke, I admit, but kind of true.
The Borderlands movie was so bad it held a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes for the first week. It has managed to drag itself up to a whopping 10% now. So uninterested was the general population that the movie drew in a pitiful $16.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, that total is now up to $24,259,061. That brings it to about what Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat managed on their opening weekends.
Keep in mind, the movie was made on a budget of around $115 million, with another $30 million or so for the marketing. According to Lionsgate, around 60% of its production costs were covered by international presales, which would come to roughly $69 million. Taking that into account, some quick maths would indicate the movie has so far lost around $51 million.
By moving it to streaming so quickly, Lionsgate are presumably hoping to wring a bit more cash out of the movie. Plus, cinemas are barely showing it at all right now. I have three cinemas near me, and none of them have screenings for it.
Unfortunately, if you want to buy the movie it’ll cost $24.99, or $19.99 to rent it. I admit to being morbidly curious, but there’s no way I’m paying that much to watch it, especially with so many good games coming out.
If any good came out of this whole thing, it’s that Borderlands 4 was officially revealed just days ago. I’m sure they were originally hoping to debut it on the back of a hugely successful and beloved movie, but we can’t always get what we want, can we?
