Chery has released the first photo of the facelifted Omoda 5, which receives a redesign to keep it fresh after two years on the market. The image, shared by Omoda Russia (which sells the car as the Omoda C5), shows a revised front end that gives the car a greater familial resemblance to the electric Omoda E5.
As part of the restyling, the Omoda 5 now shares that car’s sleeker arrow-shaped LED daytime running light “eyebrows”, joined together by a black bar with Omoda badging. Below this, the bumper has been significantly re-profiled, forming an X shape together with the revised grille – the latter ditching the current chrome-studded design for body-coloured squares.
Beyond that, the Omoda 5 looks identical to before, retaining its Nissan Ariya-esque design with its sharp lines, undulating window line, sweeping roofline and striking wraparound taillights. There are some colour and trim changes, however, most notably the trailing edge of the D-pillars that is now painted in body colour – an odd choice if we may say so. A new wheel design is also shown here.
No mechanical or spec changes were communicated, meaning the Omoda 5 will likely retain its 147 PS/230 Nm 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a CVT. Outside of Malaysia, the car is also available in GT form, utilising the Tiggo 7 Pro’s 197 PS/290 Nm 1.6 litre mill and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The facelift, which makes the Omoda branding an integral part of the car’s design, rather than simply a badge stuck on at the top of the grille, opens the door for the global expansion of the marque – already established in Europe and certain other markets. The brand, positioned above Chery, is part of the Omoda & Jaecoo (O&J) bloc and will follow in the footsteps of the more upmarket Jaecoo.
This will be the case in Malaysia, where Omoda Malaysia was teased alongside the larger C9 just this week. The brand is expected to share its showrooms and service centres with Jaecoo – separate from the Chery brand – although it is understood that the Omoda 5 (or C5) and E5 will continue to be sold by Chery.
