Ford Ranger PHEV debuts – 2.3 litre EcoBoost petrol turbo, 45 km EV range WLTP; 3,500 kg towing capacity

The Ford Ranger now gains an electrified powertrain variant with the Ranger PHEV, which has made its global debut in Germany. The PHEV variant of the Ford Ranger pairs a 2.3 litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 75 kW (102 PS) electric drive motor that is situated between the combustion engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission.

Electric drive is powered by a 11.8 kWh battery pack located between the chassis frame rails, which offers up to 45 km of EV range based on the WLTP testing standard. The charging port is located ahead of the fuel filler flap on the left-hand side of the cargo bed, and the Type 2 port suggests AC charging capability.

Power and torque figures for this electrified petrol powertrain will be made available closer to market launch in 2025, says Ford, though the manufacturer had previously said that the Ranger PHEV will deliver more torque than any other Ranger; taking the Ranger Raptor that tops the range in Malaysia, this should be in excess of the V6 model’s 583 Nm.

In other applications, the combustion unit that is the 2.3 litre EcoBoost turbo petrol in the Chinese-market Everest outputs 275 PS at 5,500 rpm and 455 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm, while the seventh-generation Mustang gets 315 hp and 475 Nm.

Ford claims that the Ranger PHEV will offer the same load-lugging performance as other petrol- and diesel-powered Ranger variants, with a claimed 3,500 kg towing capacity while off-road capability is bolstered by the model’s Advanced 4WD system with a dual-range transfer case and rear locking differential. Water wading depth for the Ranger PHEV is 800 mm, according to Ford.

Four modes are offered for the driver to choose how electricity is conserved or deployed in the Ranger PHEV. Auto PHEV offers the optimal balance between performance and efficiency, EV Now brings fully electric propulsion, EV Later conserves a portion of battery charge for later use, while EV Charge prioritises recharging of the propulsion battery while driving.

Electricity can be dispensed from the Ranger PHEV for the powering of external devices, with the Pro Power Onboard facility providing up to 6.9 kW in total from a 2.3 kW cabin socket output, and two outlets in the cargo bed providing up to 3.45 kW each.

The Ford website for the Australian market shows that the Ranger PHEV will be offered in four trim variants – PHEV XLT, PHEV Sport, PHEV Wildtrak and the top PHEV Stormtrak variant.

The Stormtrak variant of the Ranger PHEV gets a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, honeycomb grille, fender vents and an exterior decal set, while equipment includes matrix LED headlamps, the Flexible Rack system, Pro Trailer Backup Assist and 360-degree camera suite as standard. The Stormtrak also gets a variant-exclusive Chill Grey exterior colour, in addition to Agate Black.

The Ford Ranger PHEV is made in Silverton, South Africa, and customer deliveries for the electrified pick-up truck are expected to begin next year.
