Want a Tesla Model Y with the Model X’s falcon wing doors? Sorry, no such EV exists in Elon Musk’s stable, but you can take a look at this, the GAC Aion Hyptec HT. Just launched in Thailand, the EV bears resemblance to the Model Y, but sports the Model X’s party piece.

If you think you’ve seen the Hyptec HT before, the electric SUV was actually on display at the Malaysia Autoshow in May as the Hyper HT, and we also covered the EV at the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) – it’s also called the Hyptec HT in the republic.

In Thailand, the Hyptec HT comes in two variants, the Premium for 1,449,000 baht (RM183,129) and the Luxury Gull-Wing for 1,749,000 baht (RM220,996). By the way, in Malaysia, the Tesla Model Y starts from RM191,000 while the recently-launched Xpeng G6 retails from RM165,820 to RM185,820, so it’s that ballpark.

The EV battery comes with an eye-catching lifetime warranty, which is applicable to the car’s first owner. If the car changes hands, the battery warranty becomes eight years or 240,000 km, which is the same for the gull-wing doors. The general vehicle warranty is for eight years or 160,000 km. GAC Aion Thailand is also throwing in lifetime OTA updates and a free home charger.

The Hyptec HT is powered by a rear motor with 340 PS (250 kW) and 430 Nm, which takes juice from an 83.3 kWh LFP battery. 0-100 km/h is done in 5.8 seconds and top speed is 183 km/h, while claimed range is 620 km in the looser NEDC cycle.

Max charging rates are 11 kW for AC and 280 kW for DC – with the latter, getting from 10% to 70% SoC takes just 15 minutes. There’s also Vehicle to Load (V2L) power supply at 3.3 kW.

Both the regular car and the version with the gullwing doors share the same powertrain, with only the fancy doors and specs separating both. The front doors have electric open and close too, and there are 12 sensors around the car to detect surrounding objects and avoid mishaps.

There’s nothing distinctive about the Hyptec HT’s design, and it’s also rather generic inside, although there’s some Peugeot in the small steering wheel sitting below an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The centre screen is a 14.6-inch unit, and kit highlights include Nappa leather seats (massage function in front), VIP and sleep modes for the rear seats, a 22-speaker sound system with Dolby Atmos and a giant panoramic roof.

GAC Aion is of course already present in Malaysia, and dealers did let slip at the Malaysia Autoshow that an October 2024 launch was planned for the Hyptec HT. That’s next month, so we’ll look out for updates. Like what you see?
