Sometimes franchises get rebooted, and it’s all just a massive disappointment. And sometimes iconic franchises get a second look, and it works for everyone: old fans, new folks, the works. The latter is the case with Ghostbusters, which has gotten a second (After)life over the last many years. They are still cranking out new projects with a Giant Freakin Robot exclusive now confirmed: Netflix is developing an animated Ghostbusters series.

The Netflix Ghostbusters series will be animated and in 3D. The plan is to keep it in line stylistically and tonally with what we’ve been seeing recently from the franchise. This makes sense from a continuity standpoint, considering those recent iterations picked up the original timeline of the movies.

Elliot Kalan is on board as a writer for the Ghostbusters Netflix series, and he comes with a background that could keep the show very much on the funny side. Kalan worked with Netflix on Mystery Science Theater 3000 when they brought that show on to the streamer, and he’s also written for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Sony, which owns the Ghostbusters franchise, is bringing the series to Netflix under the Sony Pictures Animation banner. Jason Reitman and Gil Kanan will serve as executive producers on this upcoming show.

There are few details about the Netflix Ghostbusters series plot, though we will clearly be dropped back into this world which has been going on decades and decades now.

The most recent iteration started with 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife which kept the continuity of the original movies, That movie followed Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) who moves her kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace) to Oklahoma when they inherit Egon’s family farm. Paul Rudd got in on the action as well.

That was followed by Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire with the group heading back to New York City and joining forces with the original group of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. That movie wasn’t as critically well-received as the original reboot/ continuation, scoring just 42% on Rotten Tomatoes

The Netflix Ghostbusters series will be the third animated offering in the franchise, following The Real Ghostbusters, which aired for seven seasons starting in 1986, and Extreme Ghostbusters, which aired for one season in 1997.
