Malaysian motorcycle racer Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman has announced his retirement from two-wheel competition. In a social media post, Azlan said it was time for him to step into a new phase in his life.
Expressing thanks for those who supported him throughout his racing career, Azlan said this decision was not made lightly but after much consideration. Bringing this chapter of his life to a close, Azlan expressed his love for motorsports and hoped to stay in touch with his fans and supporters.
Hailing from Klang, Selangor, 39-year old Azlan got his big league racing start in the 2013 SuperSports 600cc Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC). He stepped onto the world stage as a substitute Moto2 rider in the 2013 San Marino Grand Prix, stepping in for Yuki Takahashi.
Azlan continued racing in Moto2 for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia in 2014, leaving in 2015 after facing financial and sponsorship difficulties. Returning to ARRC, Azlan emerged as champion in the ASB1000 class, racing for OneXOX TKKR SAG Team.
Speaking to paultan.org previously in 2021, Azlan at the time said he intended to race for two or three more years before hanging up his helmet. Asked about his future plans, Azlan said he is considering opening a race school, amongst other ways of giving back to two-wheel motorsport.
