Omoda 9 SUV teased ahead of launch in Malaysia

The Omoda 9 has been teased for Malaysia ahead of a local launch set to take place soon, according to a recent collaborative post by Jaceoo Malaysia and the newly set up Omoda Malaysia.

Omoda and Jaecoo (collectively known as “O&J”) are marketed outside China to support Chery’s export strategy. In most markets, O&J vehicles share the same dealers separate from Chery, and it looks like Malaysia will follow suit.

It’s already known Jaecoo is marketed as completely separate brand from Chery in Malaysia with no shared resources with existing showrooms and service centres. However, if the O&J strategy applies here, Omoda and Jaecoo models will be sold in the same showrooms.

We already have Omoda cars on sale here here in the form of the Omoda 5 and E5, and from what we’ve heard, these models will continue to be kept under Chery Malaysia, which also sells the Tiggo range.

On the vehicle being teased, the Omoda 9, which is also known as the Exeed RX or Yaoguang), is a five-seat, mid-size SUV built on the M3X platform. First revealed in February last year, the Omoda 9 measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall and has a wheelbase spanning 2,800 mm. With those dimensions, the Omoda 9 is larger than the Honda CR-V we have here and comparable to the Proton X90 and Tiggo 8 Pro in terms of size.

The Omoda 5 features a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. Referring to the Exeed RX sold in China, the engine makes 261 PS (257 hp or 192 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission also offered.

The Exeed RX can also be had with a plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The PHEV system also includes a front electric motor or an additional rear motor for a total system output of up to 619 PS (610 hp or 455 kW) and 920 Nm.

The Omoda 9 has been earmarked for Malaysia when we reported on it last October. It is one of three models planned for our market, with others being the Jaecoo J7 and J8, the former already on sale here and the latter previewed earlier this year.
