Supacat Medium Utility Vehicle revealed – affordable military vehicle based on Toyota Hilux pick-up truck

Supacat, a manufacturer of military equipment, has revealed a new military vehicle based on the Toyota Hilux which it is simply calling the Medium Utility Vehicle (MUV). According to Australia’s Drive, the MUV is manufactured in Sydney and is aimed at defence forces looking for a more affordable military vehicle.

The MUV is based on the dual-cab version of the Hilux, albeit with plenty of modifications to increase its utility and off-road capability. As a start, the chassis gets extended so the Hilux can be fitted with a six-wheel drive system.

Along with other changes, the MUV boasts a 6.5-tonne gross vehicle mass (GVM) with the ability to carry a payload of up to 3,000 kg. As you can tell from the photos, a machine gun and other military equipment are no problem for the six-wheeled Hilux. That machine gun can be fired from inside the cabin, as the MUV supports a common remotely operated weapon station.

As mentioned at the start, affordability is a key selling point of the MUV, which is why it uses many off-the-shelf components to reduce costs while making it easier to maintain and repair. The publication says the Hilux’s 2.8 litre inline-four turbodiesel engine is retained, although engine upgrades are offered by Supacat to customers who require more grunt.

“The MUV continues the inheritance of Supacat products by combining high mobility and high payload with liberating modularity. We believe the MUV will find favour with regional forces seeking to maximise capability while being able to support the product locally from existing resources and infrastructure,” said Matt Grech, Supacat head of future business.
