‘TRAASADI’ (Play) Review | Manav Kaul’s Soul-Stirring Journey Through Loss and Redemption

Cameos, variants, breaking down the fourth wall, and R-rated moments make Deadpool and Wolverine an X-tremely satisfying cinematic experience and a Marvelous must-see movie. So what are you waiting for, bub?

Plot

Deadpool’s peaceful existence comes crashing down when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) recruits him to help safeguard the multiverse. He soon unites with his would-be pal, Wolverine, to complete the mission and save his world from an existential threat.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool (Marvel Studios)

Movie Review [Warning: Spoilers alert!]

Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson / Deadpool after 6 years, and Hugh Jackman returns as Logan / Wolverine after 7 years. Ryan Reynolds is involved, not only as the Merc with the Mouth, but as one of the writers and producers as well. The expectation was that the movie, while being R-Rated, will deliver a lot of hilarious moments, and it sure delivered on that. With Ryan being one of the writers, I can only imagine all the jokes that happened behind the scenes.

The story continues from Deadpool 2 and Logan that was released in 2018 and 2017 respectively. I highly recommend watching previous entries of the mutant movies as well as the previous Deadpool movies. If you have gone through the previous entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you will be able to spot many references to the movies and television series in the movie. The story starts with Deadpool fighting off TVA soldiers who we saw last in the Loki television series. An impressive choreographed scene follows where you see a dancer in a Deadpool outfit breaks out the best dance movies to NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye, which propelled the song to the top of the charts on Spotify.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (Marvel Studios)

Ryan and Hugh brings their A-Game to this movie which serves as the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Reynolds make you laugh with his humor and Jackman brought the seriousness to the role like never before. We get to see many of the other stars return from previous Deadpool and Wolverine movies, but the overall focus remains on Deadpool and Wolverine who is meant to save the world again and the stakes are high because this time they are facing a villain in the form of Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin.

Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova (Marvel Studios)

Emma really played this part very well, and really hope that we get to see Cassandra in future productions again…it is the Multiverse Saga, so anything is possible. Other surprises come in the form of returning villains, as well as allies who make a comeback after many years. I’m not going to spoil too much here because if I just mention names there is a good possibility that the experience might be ruined for you. There is also a star that makes a surprise appearance that we haven’t had in a Marvel movie before, but he has been teased on numerous occasions.

Other actors who make an appearance are Matthew Macfadyen and Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle. While they both are important characters their screen time is quite limited. The same can be mentionde about the other stars such as Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus; Randal Reeder as Buck, and Lewis Tan as Rusty / Shatterstar.

Surprise appearances are awesome, but the moment is short and it begs the question why didn’t we get any other surprises from other Marvel movies? There was one character in particular who I hope will be used again in future, but it is a personal preference. Go and watch the movie, and comment on the social media posting of this article, and then I will confirm whether you guessed correctly. Cameos were promised, and Deadpool and Wolverine definitely delivered.

There were quite a lot of Easter eggs in the movie, and I highly recommend watching the movie a second or a third time to really spot them out.  Many remind you of other Marvel movies and some give a nod to potential future movies. I will allow you, the reader, to go and find those Easter eggs and do share in the comments what you find.

Most part of the movie plays off in the Void, which you will recall was an important place in Loki, the place where variants end up after being pruned. While we don’t see any Loki around, we do see many links to other movies, so the movie definitely deserves another watch.

The movie is R-rated and sure lives up to the rating with the use of language and violence that is enough to outshine an action movie. But, we didn’t come for just violence and language. We came to see how Marvel connects the dots of previous entries of both the Mutant movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The next movie entry is still months away and both continuity and the way forward is just as important.

The movie trailers released in the beginning didn’t spoil much, but as the months went by, we saw many surprises being spoilt. Something I observed during the past 4 months was the amount of talks on social media and photos that were leaked, and what is a big concern is the amount of leaks that were quite spot-on in terms of character appearances we had in the movie.

The movie has overall a great soundtrack, and you can find it on Spotify on the link below.

The movie ends in such a way where it doesn’t appear whether the storyline has really been integrated into the Multiverse Saga or Sacred Timeline. Whether it is meant to be a tease remains to be seen.

The movie offers a post-credits scene, and while funny and all, it doesn’t feel like it tease any continuity in terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also doesn’t offer any sneak peak for viewers on what’s coming next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since this movie was the only movie being released by Marvel Studios, I was hopeful to get a sneak peak at any of the movies releasing next year or even a reference to the next Avengers movie, but no such tease at the end.

My rating for this movie is 4 out 5. The movie starts of quite warm and action-packed and cooled down as the story progressed towards the end. With the fighting mostly between Deadpool and Wolverine at some point, one could wonder if the movie shouldn’t have been Deadpool VS Wolverine. While this movie takes place in the Multiverse Saga, the question remains whether they will actually be in another future production of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movie is overall a nostalgic reunion between fan-favorite heroes and villains with Reynolds and Jackman delivering a star performance worthy of joining the Avengers. Surprise appearances added to the nostalgic moment of joy, and I hope it is not the last we see of some of the heroes and villains. I’m hopeful we get to see some of the stars return to future productions. Deadpool and Wolverine provide 2 hours and 7 minutes of excitement, and I can see both Deadpool and Wolverine clawing their way to the top of the movie charts for 2024. I grew up with the animated X-Men television series and Wolverine was always my favorite of the Marvel characters. This movie provided the comic accurate suits and for this I’m really grateful.

Catch at a cinema near you, and try your best not to spoil any of the movie for your friends. If you can, do movies right by watching the movie in 3D.
