‘Jane Austen’s Period Drama’ Review (TRIBECA)

India has released several internationally acclaimed films, but it has always faced challenges in creating a pure-action flick that has worldwide popularity. Indian cinema, for the most of it, is known for creating masala films that blend action, drama, romance, comedy, and music. This multi-genre approach can sometimes dilute the pure-action elements that international audiences might expect. However, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s upcoming film KILL promises to redefine Indian cinema with its adrenaline-fueled, pure-action experience. This film is poised to break new ground and could mark India’s first-ever globally captivating action movie.

The movie starts with an introduction to the main protagonist, Amrit, a Special Ops Commando coming back from a mission. After reaching his quarters, he checks his phone and sees messages from his girlfriend, Tulika. The commando gets to know that Tulika is being pressured by her father to marry someone else and Amrit has promised her that he will take her away from there. Soon, Tulika and her entire family board a train to reach home. On the other hand, Amrit has boarded the train as well and everything is running smoothly till a group of bandits also gets inside the train. This tender storyline quickly takes a dark turn when 40 armed bandits hijack the train, terrorizing passengers and spilling blood. What ensues is a high-octane, edge-of-your-seat showdown, with Amrit taking on the bandits in a one-against-forty battle for survival.

One of the striking aspects of KILL is its meticulously crafted action sequences. The choreography in the fight scenes is breathtaking, showcasing a blend of martial arts and improvised weapon combat. For the first time in Indian cinema, every punch, kick, and blow is delivered with such intensity that it leaves the audience on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, the use of the train’s confined spaces adds a layer of claustrophobia, making the acting even more intense and exhilarating. On the other hand, the hand-to-hand combat sequences are visceral. Unlike gunfights or explosions, hand-to-hand combat showcases raw physical prowess and skill. These sequences make the film even more captivating and leave no stone unturned in delivering high-octane action. Additionally, the film’s cinematography also enhances the viewing experience. The dynamic camera work with Nikhil Nagesh Bhat perfectly captures the turbulent energy of the fight scenes. The decision to use tight and close-up shots during fights makes audiences a part of the chaos, making things even more intense and thrilling. The film’s sound design is equally impressive, with each punch and kick resonating with bone-crunching realism.

Acting-wise, Lakshya’s portrayal of Amrit is brilliant. The role demanded a lot from him, physically, and he never took a step back. The actor’s ability to convey raw emotions in the middle of the chaos is a testament to his impeccable acting skills. On the other hand, Raghav Juyal, the film’s main antagonist, is equally magnificent. Juyal portrays his character with authenticity and is magnificently twisted. His character is layered with motivations that the actor skilfully brings to life.  The supporting cast delivers strong performances that enhance the film’s gritty realism.

Overall, KILL sets a new benchmark for the action genre in Indian cinema with its exhilarating fighting sequences and relentless pacing. Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s sharp direction, combined with spellbinding fight choreography and impactful performances, assures KILL will be remembered as one of the best projects in the genre of action cinema. Whether you’re a fan of intense action or compelling storytelling, “Kill” delivers on all fronts, making it a must-watch film of the year.
